| Jacksonville Jaguars Information |
Located in Jacksonville, Florida, the Jacksonville Jaguars are a professional American football team. They play in the South Division of the American Football Conference. In 1995, the Jaguars joined the NFL as expansion team. Jacksonville also hosts the Gator Bowl annually in tradition, accompanied by different activities like parades etc., prior to the game. The annual Florida-Georgia game is also played in the city. In 1967 and 1968, the city hosted the American Football League All Star Game.
Apart from the big games the city also hosted other short-lived teams in both the World Football League and the United Football League. The city also attempted to attract other teams to play there. Five cities were chosen as finalists, including Jacksonville. Charlotte and St.Louis were considered hot favorites and for many reasons Jacksonville was considered the darkest horse in the field. Jacksonville was also the smallest television market in the running, and it was not ranked in the top 50 Neilson Markets. However the biggest hurdle for the Jacksonville bid was the problem surrounding the potential ownership group. The Touchdown Jacksonville was formed before the NFL announced its intentions to expand in 1989. The group placed its formal application with the NFL in 1991. The original ownership of the group included Jeb Bush and Tom Petway. This group formerly announced that that it would call its team the Jacksonville Jaguars. After some adjustments the group was led by J. Wayne Weaver, shoe magnate and founder of the Nine West.
In 1993, the Gator Bowl required renovations, the NFL requested the Jacksonville officials to do the needful, but after several weeks of negotiations an agreement failed to be reached, and on July 21, 1993 the council failed to approve the financing package. Deposits on season tickets were refunded, and the Touchdown Jacksonville’s offices were closed. The NFL and others advised Jacksonville interests to revise the issue and review their bid. Some weeks later talks resumed between the city and Touchdown, and a revised package was approved by a majority of the city council. Now that the Touchdown Jacksonville were back on track, Jacksonville officials were revitalized, and sold 10,000 club seats in just 10 days. Deron Cherry signed on as a major investor for the team.
The old Gator Bowl was demolished and a new stadium opened in August 1995 on the shores of the St. Johns River. It has a seating capacity of 67,164. At that time it represented the fastest construction of any major-league stadium in North America. In all, 75 percent of the seats in Jacksonville Municipal Stadium are located on the sides, with 25 percent behind the end zones. The Pride of the Jaguars wall honors former Jaguars, led by All-Pro offensive tackle Tony Boselli.
The Jacksonville Jaguars entered the NFL in 1995, as the first expansion team in 20 years. They finished their inaugural season with a record of 4-12. During this season, many players brought about early successes and began to establish themselves. The Jacksonville Jaguars achieved great success in the 1996 season, they won six of their last seven games of the season and ended with a record of 9-7, and they clinched the 5th seed in the AFC playoffs after winning a tiebreaker with the 9-7 Indianapolis Colts.
2008 Jaguars Season
The schedule for has balance. It has three, maybe four, high-demand games (Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Indianapolis and, maybe, Cleveland), and those games are spaced out neatly, which should aid sales of the not-so-high-demand games. This year this team is blessed with players who love to run down under punts and kicks. Montell Owens is the best of that bunch. He may be the league’s best at covering kicks. The quality and depth at the running back position may be the best in the league. The trio of Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew and Greg Jones address every need. The Jaguars running game should be at its strongest this season. Until the preseason finale in Washington, there was a major question mark next to Cleo Lemon’s name: Could the Jaguars win with him at the quarterback? Lemon eased concerns and quieted his critics with a strong performance in Washington and, all of a sudden, the Garrard-Lemon one-two punch appears to be formidable. At the tight end, it’s all about Marcedes Lewis. He’s poised to become one of the elite tight ends in the league and David Garrard desperately needs a deep-seam receiver. There is also plenty of depth and blocking power at the position. Vince Manuwai is poised to be recognized as one of the top road-grading Offensive line guards in the league this year. Brad Meester is expected to return at center by midseason, which should restore this line to a high level of performance.
